A life well lived
A Nova Scotia girl who became Stratford's favourite schoolteacher, Peggy filled every room with music, warmth and fresh oatcakes.
Margaret Anne MacLeod was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, the third of five children. She grew up singing Gaelic songs in her grandmother's kitchen and learned to play the fiddle before she could ride a bicycle.
After earning her teaching certificate in Halifax, she moved to Ontario in 1963, where she met Thomas Donnelly at a church dance. They married the following summer and settled in Stratford, raising three children in a house that was never quiet.
Peggy taught grade three at Avon Public School for 34 years. Generations of students remember her patience, her handwritten notes, and the jar of maple candies on her desk.
In retirement she tended an award-winning perennial garden, volunteered at the Stratford Festival, and never missed a grandchild's hockey game. She passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family.
